42 A Rhenish Limewood Carving of an Acolyte, shown standing wearing a surplice, his long flowing hair held with a jewelled fillet, he holds a jug in his left hand, the whole with traces of gilding and polychrome, 13 in., middle Rhine, 14th Century.
[See illustration]
An attractive German polychrome Group from a representation of the Mass of St. Gregory, the Pope with bald head and long stylised beard wearing a gilded cope over his other vestments, which is held at the back by a young man wearing a blue-lined cloak, 11 ¾ in., workshop of Stephan Rottaler, first quarter 16th Century
Compare the treatment of the beard of St. Gregory with that of St. Andrew in the National Bavarian Museum, see Catalogue of Sculpture, p. 222, fig. 227.
