43 A rare Spanish jet carving of the Madonna and Child, the Madonna seaed enthroned wearing a crown over her veil, the child on her lap with his right hand raised in benediction, his left clasping a book, he wears a smock and a crown, the sides of the throne carved with angels on a background showing traces of gilding, the back of the throne with a coat-of-arms of a bend with in base four pales and chief three scallop shells, 63/4 in., 14th/ 15th Century, Santiago de Compostela
Jet carvings of the Madonna and Child are extremely rare. An example about a century earlier in date in the Staaliche Museen, Berlin, no. B 1/56 was exhibited at Essen in 1957, Europaische Bildwerke, no. 87. A later Pietà group of the Madonna is illustrated in Catalogo de Azabaches Compostelanos, 1916, p. 209, fig. 28.
