NOTES
Notes
are two turrets of a castle from which King Levius and his queen are watching, in the background on the right their daughter kneels in prayer, the whole with traces of paint and gilding, 16 in. high, 15th Century, on modern wood mount.
Another example of this rare subject amongst English alabasters is in the Burrel collection, Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, see York Festival Exhibition 1954, catalogue number 89. In the Burrel example the position occupied by the king and queen and their daughter is reversed, and St. George himself brandishes a sword instead of using his lance.
